In CHROMA, students from Hungary and countries of the Danube Region come together in Budapest to participate in a simulation focussing on discrimination of minorities, minority politics and the values of the European Union.

Simulations are a method of active learning that is increasingly popular in higher education. A simulation provokes a critical approach to a topic and ensures a deeper understanding of processes and dynamics by including the participants into a roleplay that is the didactically simplified equivalent to complex real-life situations. Well-known examples of such simulations are Model United Nations.

What is CHROMA?
What are the objectives?
CHROMA has two main objectives: First, the participants are to get to understand the mechanisms behind discrimination. This means, to grasp why discrimination exists in our world, how it is maintained, how it is being reproduced. Secondly, the participants are to learn empathy and to question their own opinion by assuming new perspectives.

In addition, there are a number of secondary goals, such as developing negotiation skills, decision making, speaking in front of groups, discussing, reflecting on known narratives and conceptions of nation, minorities and state, etc.
​
This is achieved by simulating a conference, in which the diverse political parties and other agents of Avaria, played by YOU, come together to design and adopt a package of measures to counter discrimination. Next to the roleplaying phase, the CHROMA team puts high emphasis on the reflection phase – an important feature often neglected in simulations.

The Young Citizens Danube Network (YCDN) is a non-profit organization with a focus on the Danube region. The network was founded in 2010, as a civil society-oriented initiative by prospective Danube-region students of the Andrassy University Budapest.

Our mission: „The Young Citizens Danube Network is aimed at promoting diversity among young people from the Danube region by providing them with opportunities to exchange their knowledge, experience, opinions and views.
YCDN promotes youth and student exchanges with intercultural understanding on the one hand, and strengthens the civic involvement with active participation among young citizens in the Danube region, on the other hand.

Besides events that encourage the discussion and formulation of the needs of the youth in the Danube region, like conferences, YCDN also carries out and supports operational projects. The YCDN team consists of imaginative young Europeans whom have a broad professional background and want to actively shape the future of the Danube region.

How can I apply?
There will be two possibilities for you to take part in our project.
​
First, there will be a launching of CHROMA for 16 participants on January 28th. That’s a saturday right after the examination period at the hosting Andrássy University. It will be a one day experience and pilot for the longer simulation in Summer.
​
Furthermore, there will be an independant three day simulation with more participants in July 2017, for which we will be able to accept applications from the region as well. Further information to this will be released in time.
​
Please take note that the simulation in January will be in German, while the simulation in July will be in English.

FAQ

When and where will CHROMA take place?
​
We intend to host two independent simulations, with the first one in January 2017. For CHROMA, the Andrássy University Budapest allows us to use their facilities. Hence, on the 28th of January, CHROMA will be executed in the seminar rooms of the AUB at Pollack Mihály tér 3, 1088 Budapest.

Then, in July, there will be a second, international three day simulation.

I am interested in the pilot CHROMA simulation in January, but not in the summer CHROMA session. Should I still participate?
​
Yes, absolutely! We welcome anybody who would like to try our simulation without any further obligations. Vice versa, if you are only interested in the summer session, don’t worry about missing the pilot CHROMA.
​
How long will CHROMA take?
​
The simulation in January will start at 10 o’clock in the morning and last until roughly 6 p.m. (Yes, there will be adequate breaks!)
​
If you partake at CHROMA, however, it is required to stay with us for the entire length of the simulation. Simulations are complex structures, with each task building upon the former as well as on the cooperation of the participants. Ultimately, participating in „half“ a simulation not only makes little sense for you, but would also drastically take away from the experience for your colleagues.

I have exams until just the week before CHROMA starts. Do I need to prepare anything for CHROMA?
​
No.
​
Even though it is in any regards helpful to concern oneself with subjects like discrimination already before CHROMA is launched – or any other time for that matter – you will be supplied with all the information you need as to rules, setting, etc. at the simulation.
​
Are there any participation fees?
​
No, the pilot CHROMA is completely free of charge. However, we will offer an optional lunch for which we will ask for a small contribution from the participants.

Who can participate?
​
For our pilot simulation CHROMA in January, we await students based in Budapest who speak German at least at a C1 level. Although the application is open to anyone, in this round we will give priority to students of the Andrássy University.
​
For the international round of CHROMA in summer, we will drop this restriction and invite students from all over the Danube region to create an exciting international experience for everyone who is interested in the topics of (anti)discrimination and minority rights!
